Q: I have had a hard time working with large chunks of beeswax before. How do you break it into smaller chunks? Sledge hammer? Saw?

A: Go to walmart and get one of those cheap large tubs with a lid. Put your wax in it and you can store it with the lid on to keep the dust out. Get your self a small hand hatchet, and a hammer. When you need smaller chunks use the hatchet as a wedge and pound it down into the wax with the hammer. The high sides of the tub will stop most chips from flying all over the place. The wedge of the hatchet will spread the wax as you cut down through it and it will eventually crack apart as your hatchet gets further into the wax. It took us a while to figure this out and we tried a lot of different tools, knifes, torches etc to get the job done. Another tip... it is easier to do this when the wax is colder. If you have a walk in freezer or it is cold outside, that is a good place to store your wax. Get the flexible type plastic tub, not the kind that breaks easily...

RE: That is great! I bought 10 lbs earlier and had such a hard time dealing with it I vowed to never use it again; but, my customers really liked the candles; so, I am reconsidering. What I ended up doing was melting it all in a big pot and pouring it into votive containers. Then I just melt down the votives as needed. But that was a lot of work.

Q: Hello, I have a few questions, hopefully you can help! I am interested in your beeswax. I would like to make candles for myself mostly and some for family members. I have done it once before but the wax was in bricks ready to use. Could you tell me if I can make candles with your wax as it is or does it need more refinement? I am new to this so whatever info. you can offer would be appreciated! And, if I can use it in its existing state, do I melt the wax in a double broiler? Sorry for all the questions! Thank you! -Jena

It is in a large block and some additional pieces to make the weight of your order. This is the clean part of the honey harvesting process... There is other wax that has about 35 to 50 percent hive trash which would need to be remelted and separated but this is the topping wax which will sometimes have a couple of bees in it but probably 95% clean wax. We have had a lot of great feedback on this wax and it smells sweet and good. I would look up candle making on google and find out how other people melt it. Slow and low temp, watching it all the time, but I dont believe it needs a double boiler.
